Description
Key Performance Points
-
Density – 1.60 g cm⁻³ → maximises energy in limited cavity volumes
-
Detonation velocity – ~6 900 m s⁻¹ → high brisance for armour & concrete penetration
-
Melt-cast friendly (m.p. 80 °C) → fills complex shell cavities without press loading
-
Insensitive to shock & friction → safer transport, lower unintentional initiation risk than nitroglycerine-based compounds
-
Wide temperature stability → retains performance from 50 °C arctic storage to +50 °C desert deployment
Safe Handling & Storage
TNT’s low mechanical sensitivity allows bulk transport under UN 0209, Class 1.1D regulations. Store in a cool, well-ventilated, licensed magazine away from strong oxidisers or metal powders. Use compatible melt kettles with accurate temperature control to prevent localised overheating.
Environmental & Health Notes
TNT is toxic; prolonged exposure may cause anaemia or liver stress. Detonation produces nitrogen oxides that require adequate venting or scrubbers on indoor ranges. Contaminated soil should be remediated via composting or alkaline hydrolysis per local environmental codes.
